The new 83k sf Gilcrease Museum will be a transformative experience for future visitors that introduces them to the land and the collection. Like reuniting old friends, the building presents the visitor with a familiar thing seen from a new perspective. Together, the building and the site support the artwork and the museum's incredible collection.
The team worked closely with the various stakeholder groups in Tulsa to develop the project's design principles. The goals were to Elevate, Improve, and Engage.
Firstly, the team seeked to Elevate the new Gilcrease Museum by providing a transformed physical appearance from the existing 75-year-old building. The new space will work hand-in-glove with the interpretive vision and new campus master plan, presenting them side by side as a holistic learning experience.
Secondly, the museum's design will Improve the visitor journey and wayfinding by creating clear and intuitive spaces that still offer moments of discovery. To do this, the team prioritized optimizing the entry sequence clarity and improve the arrival experience.
Finally, the plan is to Engage the visitor with the site in various meaningful ways that encourage reflective and active learning. Woven throughout the project are moments for reflection that contrast interactive exhibit experiences.
