For students to succeed beyond the walls of an institution, it is essential to build a culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. Michigan State University strives to create a welcoming environment that encourages the acceptance, and expression, of all genders, races, religions, abilities, and cultures. The need for such a dedicated space has grown stronger as minority students report fewer favorable campus experiences than non-minority students. The new Multicultural Center will be a sanctuary for all minorities and provides the opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge our collective histories. It empowers people to learn about who we are today and allows others to overcome their fear of what they don’t understand or haven’t experienced. The center aims to educate all on the richness of multiculturalism. The building embodies the spirit of Sankofa and conceptualizes words like remembrance, erasure, intersection(ality), convergence, and education. Varying shades of the MSU green are used to subtly represent multiculturalism in a unified context. The human condition is universal, regardless of culture, skin tone, body type, or country of origin. We are all variations of the human condition but share the same essence. This building will be more than its bricks and mortar, and its impact will extend far beyond its site.
